I love Google innovative products. They are almost always free, simple to use and very powerful. But this is not the only reason that makes Google my favorite company.

Google is obsessed with data and in the new era of information it has become the king. It offers a bunch of products very well designed and developed, which are more powerful than its competitors and very easy to use. So far, I think that Google is the company that has contributed the most to the World Wide Web development.

I began using the Google in 2000 when I discovered its search engine. It really blew up my mind, I thought it was amazing how everything was connected through its search engine. Nowadays, I’m using many of its products: Analytics, Adwords, Adsense, Web Master Tools, Merchant, Trends, Finance, News, Gmail, Docs, Google +, Chrome, Blogger, Youtube, Translator, Books and many more. It has become an indispensable brand in my day to day life.

Google is always trying new approaches to fulfill the expectations of its clients and at the same time making things simpler. From my point of view, Google’s image represents brilliantness, smartness and simplicity. It has developed its own culture and everybody wants to work in Google because it hires the brightest minds in order to get smart and unique approaches in technology innovation. From my point of view, they are positioned as the company that offers the best possible user experience on the internet and I love it.

Saber pintar es un don que se puede perfeccionar con muchos años de técnica, pero para llegar a la genialidad de ciertos artistas, como es el caso de Picasso, hace falta más que un don o práctica y técnica. Para pintar como Picasso hace falta ser un genio. Aquí os dejo un video de Pablo Ruíz de Picasso, pintor malagueño reconocido en el mundo entero. In general, the main costs of bringing a wine to market are grapes 50%, crush process 10%, aging staring 15%, bottling casing 15%, overhead 10-15%. However, some of these costs may change in specific situations. For instance, the cost of grapes goes down if the winemaker has his own land and the costs of aging can vary significantly depending on how long the wine is kept in oak or what type of oak barrels are used by the winemaker.

In the case of Santa Rita Hills the main factor that affects wine costs is the climate.  In Santa Rita Hills the Pacific Ocean regulates temperature and creates a cool micro-climate, the area has a rocky nature and is exposed to wind and fog, and so the vines are more stressed due to extreme conditions. These factors cause that vines from this region produce smaller amount of grapes comparing with the average Californian vine. This at the end means that the cost of grapes is higher, but I would say that the quality is higher too.

According to Mr. Melville, what makes them different from other wineries is that they are authentic farmers so there is little handling or manipulation once the fruit reaches the winery. They produce completely natural wines in an organic way, looking for purity and authenticity. As Mr. Melville said, they are winegrowers who take care of the vineyard and its soil and not simply winemakers who looks at wine like if it were an industrial product that is just partially affected by the environment. Moreover, they produce wine from healthy vines which are exposed to very extreme conditions, what makes them unique because almost every winemaker is used to do the opposite in order to get more profit.

A continuación podrás ver el documental de la BBC sobre el poder del arte. En mi opinión muy recomendable. Lo he tratado de buscar con subtítulos en español pero sólo he logrado encontrarlo con subtítulos en Portugués. Para aquellos que no tengan problemas con el inglés y que les guste la historia del arte es muy recomendable.

What makes a good wine the finest wine

The American wine market has been driven by varietals for many decades. Syrah and Cabernet are just some examples of what the American market used to buy fervently. However, during the last five years some trends has changed, “a sense of balance has returned to the market” and more people is looking for honesty and authenticity.

From my point of view, an authentic wine should be elaborated following traditional processes. That means, doing almost everything by hand and without adding artificial flavors; focusing on grapes, vineyards, climate and topography, in order to get the best of each.

However, these wines have to face many challenges in the market. For instance, the final consumer does not usually have the educated palate to distinguish between a well done natural wine and a product of factory. Some may think that these short of wines seem harsh, hard and less developed although this is not true at all. Moreover, these wines are usually more expensive and less accepted between the public. I would say that it is more difficult to introduce them into the market unless some trends change.

As an expert, Mr. Galloni believes that a good wine has to be structured. According to him, good wines have a balance between flavor, body, color, light and intensity. On the other hand, Galloni’s approach as a consumer is much easier; “I am looking for wines that make me want to drink a second glass”, said in an interview to Dr. Wine.

In this interview, he also explains that all great wines share some attributes like complexity, length and texture elegance. During the class, he pointed out that he is looking for those wines that have a well finish and the capacity to improve in the bottle over time. In his own words, “these are the very finest wines”.

Cellars may also have the opportunity to contact directly to the public and explain their philosophy and methods of production as well as offer them a wine tasting.

On the other hand, this event is a great opportunity for establishing business to business (B2B) relations as they go to the gathering for sharing opinions and impressions with other partners.

What can you sell?

 A great story can help a lot while trying to sell a wine. Sometimes, the great story is the winery’s history and tradition, others its owner, who is a famous person. And in few cases, the great story is to get a score of 95 by Robert Parker.

However, what is really important for a winery is to reach its public and tell them that story. The Three-Tier System in USA

The three-tier system (TTS) began at the end of the Prohibition era in 1933. It’s a mandatory that establishes the model of distribution for alcoholic beverages in the United States. According to it, producers and importers must sell only to distributors or wholesalers, and those to retailers, who are the only ones that can sell to consumers. However, each state has its own legislation in this regard and in some states is allow for some entities to have part in two of the tiers, and at the same time, wineries are allow to sell wines on site to consumers.

There are many reasons that explain why this system was established. Originally, this system was set up to prevent vertical integrations and monopolies. It was also a way of keeping prices artificially high in order to promote temperance and avoid young people accessing to alcoholic beverages. Moreover, it was a form of fighting against mafia and its black market. Finally, it has been very useful for the states as a way of collecting more money through taxation.

In a globalize world the TTS looks old and out of phase. It’s a barrier of entrance for those who aren’t in the market as well as a competitive advantage for the domestic wine industry. I would also say that it’s anticompetitive and pushes the final price of wine high. Moreover, the idea of preventing vertical integrations seems good for those markets in which few competitors are involved, but not so good for a market in which there are thousands of players. Paradoxically, since 1985 the number of distributors and wholesalers has experienced a decrease which is causing a funnel in the chain value of TTS, and therefore, the growth of new oligopolies.

Fortunately, in November 2011 the State of Washington decided to dismantle the TTS. According to the modified law, retailers may purchase wine directly to producers bypassing distributors. This is very good news for retailers, producers and hopefully consumers, due to the fact that price of wine will be reduced significantly. I tend to think that this fact can push other states in the same path.

Buen beber y buen comer en Elciego

Hace un par de semanas tuve una cata de vinos en una bodega de la rioja alavesa. Fue toda una experiencia que me veo en la obligación de contar.

El arte y el beber son dos placeres difícilmente comparables, pero cuando los complementas se consigue  alcanzar el lado sublime de la vida, y sólo a veces, en compañía de amigos, se sabe disfrutar de esos momentos de exaltación sensitiva.

He aquí la bodega, MURUA, situada en Elciego, un pequeño pueblo de Álava en donde la mayor parte de la gente vive de la vid. En él, se encuentran algunas de las bodegas más famosas de España.

Bodegas Murua se encuentra en uno de los extremos del pueblo, justamente el extremo opuesto de donde se encuentra la otra bodega famosa de Elciego, Marqués de Riscal. La verdad es que el pueblo tiene su encanto. Comimos en un restaurante de la zona llamado la Cueva y la verdad es que la experiencia fue muy recomendable, buen comer y buen beber a buen precio. ¿Se puede pedir más?

Dicen los expertos que la tierra allí es apta para el cultivo del vino. En Murua tienen varias fincas separadas por zonas. Caminando por los viñedos uno se puede encontrar con viñas de hasta 100 años de antigüedad. Más antiguas, es dificil, pues en España hubo una plaga de filoxera que acabó con casi la totalidad de las viñas que había. No obstante, el problema de la filoxera ya está solucionado, gracias a la raíz de la vid americana, en donde se realiza un injerto de la vid europea, pues la filoxera ataca a la raíz de la vid.

La historia del vino va unida a la del ser humano, desde hace más de 7000 años, remontándonos hasta el neolítico europeo, los seres humanos nos hemos estado peleando con las vides para producir este zumo tan rico que llamamos vino. Y como no podía ser de otra manera, el vino va acompañado de comida. Dos placeres, el beber y el comer, inigualables. Que bien se pueden comparar con la música y la pintura.

Steve Thompson, el gurú de las resacas

Hoy voy a hablar de un colega que se llama Steve Thompson. Steve nació en Liverpool y vive con la familia Allison en Edimburgo. Es un tipo curiosos, licenciado en matemáticas actuariales, podría ser un genio calculando riesgos de derivados financieros, pero se dedica a dar clases de inglés y en su tiempo libre es programador informático. Fue él quien me enseñó todo el mundo de programación libre que hay detrás de wordpress.org y sólo por eso ya creo que le debo mucho. También es el creador de páginas como Peculiar Presents y the Jolly Topper Testing.

Steve también me ayudó cuando me decidí a crear esta página de periodismo real que ya corre por sí misma. En aquella época Steve era mi profesor de inglés junto con Johanna Sandberg, pero esa es otra historia. En fin, Steve es un gran tipo y por eso he decidido escribir sobre el, pues al fin y al cabo esta página me sirve para eso. Un saludo.

Muere a los 62 años Scott-Heron el padre del rap

Gil Scott-Heron ya ha pasado a ser uno de los mayores mitos de hip-hop estadounidense, murió esta semana a los 62 años tras haber convivido con el SIDA durante al menos dos décadas. Finalmente, quien acabó con la vida de este músico fue una supuesta enfermedad contraída durante una de sus giras europeas. Scott-Heron fue un miembro reseñable dentro de la contracultura estadounidense. Un rebelde y un revolucionario que pasó la mayor parte de su vida conponiendo música y consumiendo estupefacientes de todos los tipos. Nació en Chicago y a una temprana edad su mudó al Bronx. Una de sus canciones, the revolution will not be televised,  posee el honorable título de ser conocida como la primera canción de rap. Os la adjunto a continuación para ver qué os parece.

Gil Scott-Heron grabó a los largo de su vida varios discos en solitario, el último hace apenas un año, I’m New Here.  Además ha realizado colaboraciones con varios artistas. Su tema más famoso fue The Bottle, del album Winter in America. Otros discos famosos de Scott-Heron son Vulture, The Nigger Factory y So far, So good. 

De Greenberg a Rosenberg, paseando por el arte abstracto

Si hay dos críticos artísticos que merecen ser leídos para poder entender el arte abstracto que surgió a mediados del S. XX en los Estados Unidos, esos críticos son Harold Rosenberg y Clement Greenberg. Dos verdaderos genios del periodismo crítico que a pesar de tener dos concepciones del arte totalmente diferentes, supieron canalizar y explicar la energía que emanaba del nuevo arte americano, un arte que dejaba atrás al expresionismo y que ponía su acento en el color, llegaba así la abstracción expresionista.

Posiblemente el expresionismo abstracto estadounidense sea la primera gran aportación de los EE.UU. a la historia del arte pictórico. Y digo esto, sabiendo que algún purista podrá achacarme que el expresionismo abstracto alemán fue anterior. Pero lo que lograron sacar adelante artistas como Hans Hofmann, Wilhen de Kooning o Jackson Pollock… por nombrar algunos, ha sido una auténtica revolución; quizás comparable con la llegada del impresionismo a la pintura. Veámos algunas obras: Hofmann y Pollock, ¿qué os parecen? A mí me encantan.

El hombre secreto de Bob Woodward

Me gustaría empezar este artículo de periodismo 1101, haciendo una recomendación de lectura de una de las historias del periodismo de investigación moderno más apasionantes que he leído. Posiblemente el mayor escándalo de corrupción política de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, el caso Watergate. Por ello, resulta necesario hacer referencia al libro escrito por uno de los dos periodistas que realizaron la labor encomiable de investigación que logró sacar las entrañas más sucias del partido republicano a la luz de los medios. El libro se titula El hombre secreto y fue escrito por Bob Woodward, el otro periodista famoso en esta historia, fue Carl Bernstein, ambos trabajaban en el Washington Post. Este caso también es conocido por el nombre de Garganta Profunda, pues según se iban publicando datos en los periódicos se empezaba a ver que las filtraciones que los periodistas estaban recibiendo surgían de más arriba de lo que cabría imaginarse, nada más y nada menos que del sub-director del FBI, Mark Felt. En aquella época, la mano derecha de Hoover.

No quiero destripar la historia demasiado así que os dejo con las palabras públicas que afirmó otro de los afectados por este tremendo caso, Richard Nixon, cuando era Presidente de los EE.UU.

Hello world, empezamos con Nacho Valdés!

Hola mundo, lo propio sería empezar este blog hablando de mi arte, pero debido a mi ineptitud prefiero hablar del arte de los demás. Por ello, voy a empezar hablando de un artista que es amigo, una persona a la que aprecio. Nacho Valdés, un pintor plástico asturiano del cual he aprendido y aprendo infinidad de cosas sobre arte cada vez que nos reunimos. Gracias a él, llegue a la conclusión de que el arte podía ser cualquier cosa que estuviese hecha por un hombre guiado por la motivación. Que la belleza depende de los sentidos y que el que una persona sienta que algo es bello o artístico convierte a ese algo en arte.

Nacho Valdés lleva pintando desde que era un niño y ya ronda los cuarenta, me imagino que después de tantos años lo tiene claro y por ello se ha vuelto cabezón. Tras haber pasado años pintando de manera realista se ha pasado a la pintura abstracta, para ser exactos, lo que ahora pinta yo lo calificaría como geometría abstracta, lo puedes comprobar en su galería. Aunque sus anteriores acercamientos a la abstracción tenían más que ver con el expresionismo abstracto. Sus nuevas composiciones me impresionan sobre manera por los efectos visuales que causan. Sobre aquello, se escribió algo en esta página web de Periodismo.
